Bühler technology reduces breakages in frozen raspberries processing04/08/2013 Technology specialist Bühler has launched a new soft landing system for its optical sorting technology, to reduce product breakages for processors of delicate frozen raspberries. The technology was recently unveiled at an event in Washington, USA, to demonstrate Bühler’s specialist optical sorting technology for US raspberry processors.
The new soft landing system is designed to fit the SORTEX E1D range of Bühler optical sorters, helping to minimise the breakage of whole raspberries and ensuring maximum gentle handling of the product during the sorting process.
Stephen Jacobs, Bühler’s fruit and vegetable global product manager said: “A major problem for frozen raspberry processors is the fragility of the product once frozen”. Depending on the variety type, breakage levels for this product, when handled within the sorting process, can be up to 10%. Buhler was keen to offer a solution to the problem that would allow processors to minimise breakages and to maximise the high commodity value of the whole raspberry.
The recent demonstration in Washington tested two full pallets of frozen raspberries. In addition to the final handling of the fruit, sliding through the new gentle handling system, the machine was also set up to demonstrate the unique and powerful combination of the three technologies within the SORTEX E1D, working in unison. “The combination of colour bichromatic cameras, enhanced InGaAs and PROfile (shape) technology,” said Jacobs, “efficiently detects and removes foreign material (FM) such as leaves, stems and mould, as well as over and undersized product from the main stream.”
The new soft landing technology, coupled with the SORTEX E1D’s existing technologies enabled the processor to achieve a clean acceptable product of whole raspberries free from ‘crumbles’. The trials of the new technology showed a reduction in breakage levels through the machine to less than 3%.
SORTEX E Range of Optical Sorters
The SORTEX E range of optical sorters was designed to bring the benefits of large sorters like the SORTEX K to processors with restricted space, whilst still delivering high quality inspection for discoloured or misshaped product, subtle blemishes, FM and EVM. Like all SORTEX machines, the SORTEX E1D combines bichromatic cameras, InGaAs technology, PROfile (shape) technology, and fast, precise ejectors to ensure accurate elimination of contaminants.
