Boosting food security, protecting the environment

Joytun Auto Rice and Dal Mills Ltd Khulna, Bangladesh

Situated just north of the city of Khulna in southern Bangladesh, Joytun Auto Rice and Dal Mills is a successful family business that has been in operation for almost  40 years. In 1999 CEO and Chairman Shafiar Rahman took over the running of the organization from his father, and has since been implementing his plans for significantly expanding its operations.

Sustainable technology

The business already included a large flour mill, and in 2017 the management decided to add a brand-new rice facility in partnership with Bühler. This became the first organized rice processing facility in the Sunderbans region, which is home to the world’s largest area of mangrove forests and contains four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A focus on providing best-in-class sustainable technology was therefore vital, in order to minimize any impact on the environment.

The complete system is highly efficient and all our customers are very satisfied, especially due to their lowered operating costs.

Fazal Uddin Ahmed, Bühler Sales Manager

The mill has two boiled rice units, each with a capacity of 16 tons per hour, as well as an aromatic rice unit with a capacity of eight tons per hour. The state-of-the-art plant is equipped with Bühler technology throughout, including a SORTEX sorter and an industry-leading advanced continuous dryer with WinCos automation.

High yields

The fact that the plant is fully automated means that the downtime is 50% lower compared to other mills, while a very low broken rate contributes to a yield percentage of around 2 to 3% higher. As well as playing a key role in the ongoing success of the business, this is also supporting the Bangladeshi government’s drive to improve food security in the southern part of the country.

We are very happy with the production and we are proud to be the first technically advanced rice miller in the southern part of Bangladesh.

Shafiar Rahman, CEO and Chairman Joytun Auto Rice and Dal Mills
