Compensating the Environmental Impact of the Networking Days Event

The Bühler Networking Days brings together industry leaders from around the globe to discuss the key challenges facing the food, feed and mobility industries. The event itself will also impact the environment. Where possible we have taken steps to reduce the on-site environmental impact, using local suppliers, sustainable products, re-useable materials, local foods with vegetarian & vegan options etc. However, by far the biggest impact is the CO2e footprint associated with all the transportation of guests to the event.

The event footprint has been estimated at 1,300 tons CO2e. This estimation includes flights, food, local transportation, accommodation and infrastructure. Although we assume that many of our guests will have compensated their own flights, we cannot guarantee this, and have decided to consider the entire 1,300 tonnes in our CO2e compensation for the event.

We are compensating the impact through a combination of nature & technology-based solutions. We have selected 2 partners, Restor and Climeworks, for this. With Climeworks we have purchased the permanent removal of CO2. Climeworks develops, builds and operates Direct Air Capture (DAC) machines to capture CO2 directly from the air and sequester it permanently in rocks via the Carbfix method. Climeworks machines consist of modular CO2 collectors that can be stacked to build machines of any size. Climeworks' direct air capture machines are powered solely by renewable energy or energy-from-waste. With this contribution we also hope to draw attention to Climeworks’ DAC technology and raise awareness of the importance of their role in mitigating climate change.

We have funded climate contributions with two projects on the Restor Platform with two NGOs: World Trails Network/Pacific Slope Trail (see project location) and Pandu Alam Lestari Foundation. Restor is a science-based open data platform supporting and connecting the global restoration movement.

We have carefully chosen these projects to raise awareness of the importance of nature-based solutions, not only in climate contributions, but also to protect and restore biodiversity and generate incomes in rural communities. By choosing projects with Restor, we have benefitted from their expertise and global ecology network. We will use their platform to monitor progress of these projects in the future.

We will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our participants in alignment with health regulations and guidance from the local authorities. Please plan your trip according to the current travel regulations for entering Switzerland. More information here.
