Bühler and EPFL join forces for more innovation

Uzwil, 03/11/2015 – Growing demand for food safety, increasing mobility, or climate change are issues which the Bühler Technology Group deals with day in, day out. In order to find new solutions to such global challenges, Bühler is now collaborating closely with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). Since March of this year, Bühler operates an Innovation Satellite in the Innovation Park of the EPFL. Peter Böhni, longtime head of Nutrition Solutions at Bühler, heads the Satellite. “The EPFL is an important partner of our worldwide Open Innovation network. ‘Collaborative Innovation’ is the only way we can successfully meet the global challenges that we are facing.” “At the center of our collaboration with the EPFL are visionary approaches that will be implemented within five to ten years and may point the way for Bühler technologies,” continues Peter Böhni. At the same time, the collaboration and in particular the Satellite will allow on-site contacts and exchanges between Bühler employees, laboratories, companies, start-ups, professors, and students. “A current example of this is Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing, a technology that stands to revolutionize the way in which engineers work. Cooperation with the science community enables us to better show our employees and customers the potential of this technology.”

The opening of the Innovation Satellite in the Innovation Park of the EPFL continues the string of successful earlier projects carried out with the EPFL. For example, last spring a competition was launched with EFPL students to find ways to reduce food losses. A total of 90 ideas were generated to minimize today’s 30% loss of food from the field to people’s tables. With its industrial-scale solutions, Bühler is making a substantial contribution to optimizing the grain processing value chain and thus to mitigating hunger in the world.

Bühler operates a unique Open Innovation network and takes a state-of-the-art innovation management approach. Beside collaborating with universities and research institutes worldwide, Bühler organizes an annual Innovation Challenge with its employees around the world and fosters innovation in collaboration with customers and suppliers. The Urs Bühler Innovation Fund (UBIF), established in 2014, additionally supports the company’s innovation efforts beside the roughly 5% of its sales revenue that it invests in research and development every year.
