Discover how KRBL leverages advanced Bühler technology across rice milling, drying, automation, and sorting to consistently deliver premium-quality Basmati rice.
Basmati rice – often called the jewel of rice – is cherished worldwide for its delicate aroma and long, slender grains. Behind its global success lies a story of tradition, innovation, and a partnership built on trust and shared ambition.
At the heart of this story is KRBL, the world’s leading exporter of Basmati rice. With its flagship brand India Gate, KRBL reaches over 90 countries and more than 11 million households annually, setting global benchmarks for quality, authenticity, and consistency.
Every market KRBL serves comes with its own regulations and quality requirements. Meeting them demands uncompromising precision at every step of the process.
“Each grain matters to us,” says KRBL. “To deliver consistent quality worldwide, we rely on precision, consistency, and innovation; and on a technology partner who shares these values – that partner is Bühler”.
The collaboration between KRBL and Bühler began more than 30 years ago, starting with basic cleaning solutions and evolving into one of the most influential partnerships in the global rice industry.
Driven by KRBL’s ambition to build world-class solutions in India, for India, Bühler developed the country’s first locally manufactured rice milling equipment in the mid-1990s. A major milestone followed in 2001 with the commissioning of a highly advanced rice mill in Ghaziabad – a major step that would help redefine industry standards.
As India’s rice landscape evolved, a major turning point came with the introduction of PUSA 1121, a revolutionary extra-long grain Basmati variety. While its exceptional length created strong market demand, it also posed unprecedented processing challenges.
Conventional equipment could not handle the grain without breakage. Together, KRBL and Bühler re-engineered machine designs, process flows, and automation concepts to preserve grain length, quality, and authenticity. This joint innovation became another defining milestone in their partnership.
For KRBL, excellence starts long before rice reaches the mill. Cleaning and drying are critical to ensuring yield, appearance, and cooking quality.
Together, KRBL and Bühler developed efficient pre-cleaning systems, paddy separation, and gentle drying technologies. These solutions minimize broken grains, reduce discoloration, and ensure consistent, high-quality output at scale – while also improving energy efficiency.
The partnership goes far beyond machines. KRBL and Bühler work side by side to co-create tailored, end-to-end solutions – from grain intake to final sorting – aligned with KRBL’s exacting quality standards.
KRBL‘s trust plays a key role in Bühler‘s innovation process, as many new Bühler solutions in drying, milling, and sorting are first validated at KRBL facilities.
Today, KRBL operates highly automated and optimized rice mills in Dhuri, Punjab (120 tons/hour) and Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (57 tons/hour), along with additional major facilities across India. Each site is powered by Bühler technology, ensuring reliability, hygiene, and operational efficiency.
What sets the partnership apart is a deep mutual understanding – optimizing drying curves, fine-tuning sorters, and continuously adapting processes to meet evolving market and consumer expectations.
“They work with us – not just for us,” KRBL emphasizes. “It is one of the many factors that have helped India Gate Basmati establish a strong leadership position globally”
By blending tradition with innovation, KRBL and Bühler continue to redefine rice processing. From empowering farmers to pioneering sustainable practices, their shared commitment shapes the future of Basmati rice – one grain, one innovation, and one partnership at a time.
