New career path framework
Our global M2M community (M2M stands for market to market) makes sure our innovations and products are aligned with the respective market and customer needs and turns those needs into business opportunities for Bühler. The M2M BEC (Business Excellence Committee) has now initiated a new, global framework for Bühler: The M2M career path with aligned development stages and job profiles for the different M2M functions across all businesses and regions.
Carmen Püntener, June 1, 2021
We want to be close to customers, develop exactly what they need and not least, align our innovations and newest products with our sustainability goals and our claim “innovations for a better world”. “And we want to translate the market needs into winning business strategies and business models”, says Sandra Lutz, Global Head of M2M. Sandra has taken over her new role as of October 2020. Within her position, she and her team streamline the M2M process and its tools throughout the company and enhance M2M-related trainings via the M2M business academy.
According to Sandra, almost 10 percent of our employees worldwide, more than 1,200 colleagues with 37 nationalities, work in M2M functions on more than 20 sites globally. They work in various departments, be it in a Business Area’s R&D (Research and Development) or product management, in supply chain management, or in Corporate Technology, but they perform M2M process tasks in their daily work.
These colleagues have their own department heads and their own projects and goals, but through the overarching M2M community, they are connected and align their tools and working structures to those of other colleagues. Since the beginning of 2021, the new M2M execution team provides support and guidance globally.
We need to retain talent and knowhow within Bühler, while at the same time ensuring that the brightest heads join us.

For example, the M2M product master data team, which consists of almost 40 colleagues based in Uzwil and Bangalore, provides a group-wide assortment of standard and norm parts, and ensures that the ATO process (Assemble to Order) works smoothly throughout the Bühler Group. Together with the businesses’ R&D, this team develops configurators for the project execution teams and for single machine business, for them to create an order bill of material (O-BOM) for MLS (Manufacturing, Logistics & Supply Chain) automatically. This ensures that our products can be configured to customer requirements while having an efficient data interface to manufacturing.
To strengthen collaboration throughout the Bühler Group, and to offer clear development opportunities for colleagues working in M2M functions, the Global M2M team has now set up a new career framework. “We have a great pool of talents, a motivated and engaged community. But so far, the positions and career structures were much more interwoven in the respective business departments, and not aligned globally,” says Sandra.
With this initiative, Sandra and her team want to streamline the career opportunities within the M2M functions, from M2M project management, R&D, product management to supply chain engineering. “We need to retain talent and knowhow within Bühler, while at the same ensuring that the brightest heads join us,” she says.
Next to the classic management career, they now also set up a clear framework for the expert career in M2M. “Many people don’t want to get into a management position but have great knowledge and want to develop further. We want to give them transparent stages and a clear path with the possibility to grow,” says Sandra Lutz. In order to promote the new career path structure, there will be various virtual info sessions during June 2021. You can watch out on the M2M Business Academy site on B-World for more information on these sessions. “It is a start,” Sandra says, “and we greatly appreciate feedback to further develop our initiative.”
M2M is Bühler’s market to market process. Here, R&D, supply chain, and product management all come together to develop new products and technologies, and lifecycle them. In October 2020, Sandra Lutz took over the new role of Global Head of M2M, with the task to enhance M2M excellence and efficiency and optimize Bühler’s M2M footprint. Her department has the global lead for M2M-related topics and acts as an enabler on group level. The M2M execution team is also a service and support function for our business areas and business units:
The team comprises the M2M Business Academy, Program Management for core projects, and Product Master Data Management.
Sandra Lutz completed her studies of Production and Management in Austria. She started her career at Wintersteiger AG, an industrial company that provides – among other services – equipment for crop research, as well as for service equipment for skiing. After a short time, Sandra was delegated to Beijing in China to establish a new branch office there. In the following, she held various positions in industrial companies as Business Developer, Area Sales Manager, a further posting as General Manager in Beijing for Grimme, a world leader in potato field equipment, and as Global Product Manager for Case IH and Steyr tractors at CNH Industrial – part of the Fiat Group, with a strong matrix organization. In 2015, Sandra joined Bühler in Leobendorf as Head of Product Management for the Business Unit Wafer and implemented the Product Management function there.
