Helping those in need

Bühler South Africa donates to the Lighthouse Baby Shelter

In early March 2021, Bühler Johannesburg initiated a campaign in the office for all employees to donate Easter eggs, knitted hats and scarves, and clothes for their traditional Easter drive. Together with Ayanda MVP, a local South African DJ, through the Sizakele Foundation (non-profit organization) that she runs, they chose the Lighthouse Baby Shelter as this year’s recipient of the donations.

The orphanage was founded in June 2008 and to date has raised more than 170 children, and were able to find a forever home for more than 160 children. The home relies solely on public donations and is grateful for support. On April 1, members of the Bühler Johannesburg team visited the Lighthouse Baby Shelter together with Ayanda MVP and her team.

Priceless smiles

Taryn Browne, co-initiator of the Easter drive, was there to deliver the goods. “Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the children’s beautiful home. There are currently 11 children at the home, ranging from 9 months to 16 years old. The home is warm and bright and has the most beautiful garden and areas for the children to enjoy. Everyone was happily hunting for Easter eggs when we arrived with the donations, but they were delighted, if a little shy at first, to talk to us about the fact that they are on holiday and enjoy going on outings to the ice rink and the likes.”

During the school term, the children are home schooled on the premises by a tutor. The classroom is brightly decorated with many educational posters and books. The children also have the use of iPads, a big screen TV as well as computers for online platforms. The visit to the home made the team realize how grateful everyone at Bühler should feel. The team was immensely touched and happy to be able to light up these little faces with some spoils. Bühler Johannesburg is now in discussion to take the kiddies out on a fun-filled day soon.

Thanks to everyone who donated, it is so appreciated. A special thanks goes out to one of our colleagues’ wife that lovingly knitted 20 sets of beautiful beanies and blankets – these will definitely keep the chills out this winter.
