Better feed, fewer resources, smarter production

As feed production faces growing pressures, Bühler Changzhou helps producers do more with less

Changzhou (China) and Uzwil (Switzerland), October 19, 2026 – Global feed production has grown steadily over recent years, rising by another 2.9% in 2025 to 1.44 billion metric tons. Even as the industry continues to expand, feed producers worldwide remain under growing pressure to improve efficiency, make better use of raw materials and energy, maintain consistent quality, and take advantage of digitalization. To help producers navigate this changing landscape, Bühler Changzhou, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, brings together animal nutrition expertise, technology, digital solutions, and services under one roof.

Since its establishment in 2006, Bühler Changzhou has grown into one of the company’s three global manufacturing hubs and serves as the global headquarters of Bühler’s Animal Nutrition business. There, feed producers can work with Bühler teams across manufacturing, research and development, applications, training, and customer service to test new recipes, develop new processes, and explore solutions for evolving production needs.

Today, the site’s team of 1,000 supplies customers worldwide with around 30,000 units of equipment each year, including pellet mills, hammer mills, mixers, micro-dosing systems, vacuum coating equipment, extrusion systems, dryers, material handling solutions, and a range of digital solutions.

As Bühler Changzhou marks its 20th anniversary, the plant in Changzhou is operating at maximum capacity, with orders booked through next year.

"Together, we have developed technologies that help feed producers improve efficiency, strengthen quality, and make better use of resources as their needs evolve. Over the last 20 years, Changzhou has grown into a center of expertise for developing and manufacturing these technologies,” said Philipp Hug, Head of Business Unit Animal Nutrition at Bühler. “This two-decade journey is also a testament to the trust of our customers and the dedication of our employees, partners, and suppliers."

Bringing the industry together around common challenges

More than 650 customers, partners, suppliers, and industry experts from across the globe joined Bühler for the anniversary. The celebrations included Bühler’s Value Nutrition Innovation Forum, focused on some of the industry's most pressing questions: how to improve manufacturing efficiency, use resources more effectively, integrate digital technologies, and meet changing nutritional needs

Participants shared experiences and explored developments in livestock and poultry feed, aquafeed, premix production, and pet food. Visits to customer plants offered a firsthand look at how processing technologies are used in commercial production to improve efficiency, quality, and operational transparency.

“Our industry needs to meet growing nutritional needs while managing raw material costs, making better use of available resources, adapting to new ingredients, and maintaining quality and food and feed safety,” said Philipp Hug. “Efficiency and digitalization are key. Forums like this help us share experience, explore new approaches, and work together on solutions for the future.”

Turning industry demands into practical solutions

The technologies presented during the anniversary were designed to tackle these challenges, from reducing energy use and improving process control to increasing efficiency and using production data more effectively.

Among them was the Z-Mission, a heat recovery system designed to increase energy efficiency. Bühler also presented the Nutrex 7 Series, Bühler’s new generation of extrusion system, available to customers since May 2026 and the Kubex 5 Series, the latest pellet mill for animal feed and food production.

Digitalization is another part of this shift toward more efficient and predictable production. The digital systems PelletingPro and ProteinPro provide real-time data and closed-loop control, helping create the foundation for the smart feed factory.

"The technologies we presented during the event respond to priorities we hear from customers around the world," said Liping Shao, General Manager of Bühler Changzhou. "Producers need practical ways to improve efficiency, use raw material more efficiently, strengthen process control, and turn production data into better decisions. Our focus is on solutions that deliver these benefits in day-to-day operations."
