Bühler GmbH, Braunschweig: Reorientation of production site in Braunschweig now settled – positive outcome of negotiations with social partners.

Uzwil/Braunschweig, 08/15/2014 – The reorientation of production activities at the Bühler location in Braunschweig, which was announced in May, has now been finalized, with a group-wide center of stainless steel manufacturing competence being set up there. This step involves the loss of some 160 jobs, of which about 40 will be reduced by attrition (e.g. through retirement). At the same time, some 40 employees will be retrained for taking up jobs in the new stainless steel manufacturing facility. An amicable settlement has been reached with the social partners to balance interests, and a social plan has been set up. The restructuring does not affect the sales, customer service, or project functions with their roughly 280 employees. Overlaps in support functions will be eliminated as part of the staff reduction.

Despite the extensive measures decided together with the social partners and taken in 2012, it has so far not been possible to secure the competitiveness of Braunschweig as a production site on a sustainable basis. As a result, its production capacities now have to be reduced. This most recent decision to streamline the existing production portfolio while investing in a new center of stainless steel manufacturing competence opens up new prospects for the manufacturing location in Braunschweig. It is based on the assumption that the site will achieve a sustainable level of competitiveness by the end of 2015.

After balancing all interests, a social plan was agreed with the works council following intensive and constructive discussions in order to ensure a socially responsible reduction of personnel. Among other things, it makes provision for the affected staff to join a transfer company in order to qualify them and support them in seeking new jobs. The tariff contract provisions remain in place unchanged.
