Large, larger, largest07/04/2007 China is the world’s largest beer market, and the Yongshuntai Malting Group the country’s largest malt producer. The Group recently signed a contract for the supply of a tower malthouse with the world’s highest batch processing capacity of 550 metric tons, selecting Bühler as its supplier. This is quite natural, since Bühler is the global market leader in this field. The site that the Yongshuntai Malting Group selected for its new tower malthouse is that of its headquarters, the Guangzhou Malting Co. Ltd., in the southern province of Guangdong. The new facility will achieve an annual capacity of 100,000 metric tons of malt. It is scheduled to go on stream even before mid2007.
Equipped with ECOSteep from Bühler
The new tower malthouse will incorporate cuttingedge Bühler malting technology and have a batch processing capacity per unit of 550 metric tons of barley. The entire installation consists of a flatbottom steep tank, three germination units, and two kilns – all housed in a single tower. The novel ECOSteep flatbottom steep tank will be applied for the steeping process. It consumes up to 35 percent less water than a conventional flatbottom steep. After Holland Malt, Guangzhou Malting is the second largescale facility to be equipped with an ECOSteep system.
For the germination units, rotary floors with a diameter of 33.5 meters will be provided together with stationary green malt turners. This system offers a number of technological benefits and allows the building to be equipped with a stationary, stable center column with a diameter of 5.5 meters. The center column can carry up to one third of the total product and equipment load of up to 1000 tons. This results in lower building heights and a reduced ceiling thickness compared with buildings having selfsupported ceilings.
Good energy balance
Rotary floors will also be applied in the two kilns below. The kilns are filled with half the batch of 275 metric tons of barley in the form of green malt. It is possible to operate the kilns concurrently as singledeck kilns or staggered as twindeck kilns in order to reduce the consumption of heating energy. The installation will be equipped with the Bühler WinCos control system, which has been tailored to meet the customer’s specific needs and to achieve optimal malting operations. The ECOSteep in conjunction with the world’s highest batch processing capacity of 550 metric tons of barley allows the plant to operate at low production costs.
