Food and feed safety along the value chain
Food and feed safety has become a paramount issue. Consumers demand full transparency across the food chain. Bühler meets these requirements with a holistic approach.
Food safety is the game changer for food manufacturers. Hardly a day passes without news on food that is contaminated, adulterated or has made people ill. We at Bühler have taken up the food safety challenge and are committed to innovations for safe feed and food processing across the value chain.
The strong focus on food safety is driven by growing global trade and increasing industrial food production. Also, progress in the detection of all sorts of contaminants leads to reassessment of food safety risks. On the other side, consumers’ trust in the agro-food industry is shaken by food safety alerts that sometimes go viral on social media.
Safe raw materials
Food Safety starts with safeguarding the quality of raw materials. Mycotoxins are considered a major threat to humans and animals. These poisonous compounds are formed on crops by fungal molds, and climate change is promoting this hazard. Efficient post-harvest drying of grain effectively reduces mycotoxin formation. In addition, grain cleaning solutions allow mycotoxin removal at an early stage of the value chain. Optical sorting rejects the highly contaminated grain fractions, but also eliminates foreign material like wood, plastic or glass.
Good hygiene is essential for good manufacturing practice (GMP). Bühler is member of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) and places strong emphasis on hygienic design. An example of outstanding hygienic design is the new Bühler flaking mill; where the design ensures good accessibility for efficient cleaning. But hygienic design also means placing special care on the materials. Our new Diorit roller mill features corrosion-free stainless steel of parts that are in contact with the food. Another example is the Nova sifter. Its design and material selection reduce the risk of flour contamination.
Eliminating harmful bacteria
This is a contribution from Béatrice Condé-Petit, Group Expert and Food Safety Officer at Bühler.
Finally, the control of harmful bacteria calls for reliable kill steps for safe ready-to-eat products. This is a critical aspect in feed processing, because safe feed means healthy livestock and safe animal foods. Bühler has designed the pelleting of feed into a trusted kill step by combining expertise in engineering, process technology, automation and microbiology. And the journey goes on. Bühler fosters collaborative innovation to build the food safety solutions for today and tomorrow.
