The new DEIMOS 5500 sputtering system, manufactured by Bühler Leybold Optics, is designed for the coating of astronomical mirrors with diameters of up to 4.5 m. The system is equipped with four magnetron cathodes for metal and dielectric layers. Typically, aluminum and silver mirrors can be produced with protective and enhancing layers in order to achieve the highest reflectance and durability.   • Mirrors made up of aluminum (Al) or silver (Ag) layers can be produced by Bühler Leybold Optics’ proprietary magnetron cathodes. 
  • A total of four sputter targets with a DC pulsed or DC sputter power supply is possible. The flexible cathode inclination with respect to curved mirror surfaces provides excellent uniformity across the entire surface of the individual mirror.

Pre-cleaning with glow discharge
Substrate and chamber conditioning with MF and DC glow discharge allows perfect preparation to achieve optimum coating results in order to meet the highly demanding quality requirements of astronomical mirrors.

Intelligent design for easy substrate handling

  • The movable lower chamber section grants high accessibility and allows an easy handling of the mirror. 
  • Mirrors can be easily loaded and unloaded into and out of the free-standing chamber by crane.
