The roots of Leybold Optics can be traced back to the companies founded by the legendary pioneers Ernst Leybold and Wilhelm Carl Heraeus in the middle of the 19th century, 160 years ago. What followed was the story of two garage firms that rose to become the dominating companies in vacuum technology worldwide, a story full of groundbreaking inventions and entrepreneurial spirit. In 1967, Leybold and Heraeus merged into one company – in a way the incubator of Leybold Optics. In the beginning of 2012, Leybold Optics GmbH became a subsidiary of the Bühler Group based in Switzerland: Business Unit Leybold Optics, legally rebranded to Bühler Alzenau GmbH in 2015, operates under the Advanced Materials division within the Bühler Group. As one of the world leaders in thin-film technology, Bühler Leybold Optics develops and manufactures high-vacuum deposition equipment for a broad range of applications. With more than 200 employees in total, this entity is a globally active high-tech subsidiary of Bühler. Its main headquarters is based in Uzwil, Switzerland, while the Bühler Leybold Optics main production site is located in Alzenau, Germany; other production facilities of Bühler Leybold Optics operate in Beijing, China and Cary, North Carolina, USA.

A network of Sales & Services centers around the globe ensures close contact to the extensive customer base and effective support for more than 2000 Bühler Leybold Optics systems in the field. Bühler Leybold Optics targets the industries of ophthalmics, Precision optics, optoelectronics, flexible electronics, flexible packaging, 3D coating, and large-area coating. The large-area coating portfolio includes vacuum systems for the coating of architectural glass, electronic displays and other large surfaces. The Precision Optics unit of Bühler Leybold Optics commercializes deposition systems for lenses while Ophthalmics produces eyeglass coating systems. Flexible Electronics and Flexible Packaging are combined into vacuum systems for the coating of plastic foils, paper and foil coatings for foil capacitors. The coating of complex 3D parts for the automotive industry is managed by the 3D Coating section.
