Grinding and crushing plants
In the beginning of the brewing process is grinding and crushing when the whole malt kernels are crushed into coarse flour. The grist produced this way forms the basic material for the brewing process.
Being globally the biggest know-how centre for grain processing, Bühler is also specialized in the engineering and construction of grinding and crushing plants. About 60% of the global beer production is owed to Bühler grinding and crushing systems.
There are different ways to produce malt grist. Bühler basically offers two versions: the grinding of malt into coarse grist or its crushing into fine grist:
Lauter-tun coarse grist
For maximum yields and shortest lautering times. The malt grist is either ground in dry condition or is humidified (conditioned) before. There are the following plant components to choose from:

Here, the malt is processed into grist by using the G-G-S-G method, i.e. grinding is carried out twice and sifting is done once followed by another grinding cycle, rendering a high husk volume for a quick clarification.
Mash-filter fine grist
Vertical rotor mills produce grist powder for all mash-filter systems customary in the market. A very low power requirement and low noise level are ensured. For the grinding of malt into thin-layer mash-filter fine grist, the following plants are available:
