Material Properties of Zirconium Dioxide

ZrO2 is a material known from the field of ceramics. It is mainly used in the grinding media of bead mills, electronic connectors, the jackets of optical fibers, and in the area of dental ceramics. Doting with yttrium enables ZrO2 to be stabilized against crystalline phase transitions at high temperatures. Another characteristic – the capability of conducting oxygen ions – can be utilized in applications involving solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and λ-sensors for catalytic converters in automobiles. The lower particle sizes of n-ZrO2 reduce the sintering temperature and thereby allow the production of thinner n-ZrO2 membranes. The high refractive index of n-ZrO2 enables the particles to be used for the transparent adjustment of the refractive index of a given matrix or optical components up to the physically possible limit. In nanocomposites used in dental surgery, n-ZrO2 mechanically reinforces the polymer and allows an adjustment of the permeability of the material to x-rays. In all, n-ZrO2 offers a versatile platform for product innovations. Why not speak with Buhler PARTEC to develop the full functionality of your product formula?
